 Job Description

General Definition of Work: The Events & Marketing Manager will plan and implement all phases of SDH events, rentals, marketing and advertising for the Sam Davis Home. The Events & Marketing Manager position is a full time salary job of 40 hours per week scheduled Monday through Friday reporting directly to the Executive Director. Occasional after hours or weekend work will be required.  

 Qualifications:  This person should have at minimum a bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, event planning, or a related field and 1-2 years of related experience.

 Supervision:  This position is under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.

 Specific Responsibilities:

General

    • Carry out the mission of the Sam Davis Home and implement the policies established by the SDMA Board of Directors
    • Assist Executive Director with the day-to-day operation and management of the site including 168 acres and 17 buildings, three office staff members, six to eight site interpreters, interns, volunteers and community service workers
    • Assist in hiring, supervising, and training staff members as needed
    • Develop and coordinate relationships with other tourism sites, educational groups and surrounding community to promote the site and its mission.
    • Research and answer SDMA Board inquires
    • Answer emails and phone calls.
    • Assist the Director with all other duties as assigned.
    • Work all special events

 SDH Special Events

    • Events include annual educational and fundraising events as well as one-time seasonal events.
    • Planning includes working individually, with other staff, and/or with the events committee to:
    • Recruit and schedule vendors (if applicable)
    • Recruiting sponsors
    • Scheduling staff and volunteers
    • Designing and distributing marketing materials and press releases to promote events, both via online media & in person to local businesses
    • Coordinating logistic needs such as tables/chairs/tents/d├ęcor/music/etc.
    • Working with the executive director to set and follow a budget
    • Maintain relationships with local vendors.
    • Be the primary contact on event days for staff/vendors/event guests

Rentals

    • Maintain relationships with local vendors.
    • Be the primary contact on event days for staff/vendors/event guests
    • Schedule appointments & meet with potential renters (usually 3-6 appointments per week lasting 30 minutes to an hour each).
    • Schedule photoshoots.
    • Manage rental contracts and vendor insurance paperwork.
    • Process deposits, payments, and deposit returns.
    • Schedule staff to cover rentals occurring after business hours.
    • Ensure that the property is in proper condition for rentals – meaning fully stocked, cleaned, and landscaped.
    • Answer questions as needed from renters, planners, vendors, etc.
    • Ensure policies were followed after each event.

 Marketing

    • Seek out advertising opportunities that fit the SDH budget and mission.
    • Maintain an online and social media presence by regularly updating:
    • The SDH website
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Pinterest
    • The SDH wedding website
    • Other event/tourist websites for Rutherford County & Middle Tennessee

Daily/Weekly tasks

    • Answering emails & phone calls
    • Welcoming guests & setting them up for a tour when site interpreter is on tour.
    • Process bi-weekly and special event bank deposits and take to the bank before closing.
    • Daily cleaning tasks such as cleaning restrooms, Visitor Center (conference room, gift shop, museum) Creek House, Education Building, Office.
    • Work in gift shop.
    • Manage the consignment portion of the SDH gift shop including recruiting consignors, stocking their products, and processing their monthly payments.
    • Doing research for and answering questions/concerns of board members relating to events/marketing. 


Part-Time Site Interpreter/ Event Staff

Job Description

The Sam Davis Home and Museum located in Smyrna, Tennessee, is seeking part-time Site Interpreters to begin immediately. Open daily for tours, special events, educational field trips, and more, the Sam Davis Home sits along the bank of Stewarts Creek on 168 acres of preserved farmland with fourteen historic structures. As a vital part of the historic house team, Site Interpreters are the gateway to our visitors, giving them the unique, enjoyable hands-on experience they are looking for.

Site Interpreter responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Greet Visitors
  •  Guide visitors through the 19thcentury home, outbuildings, and grounds
  • Facilitate discussions with visitors
  • Assist with educational programs, materials, preparation, and clean up
  • Inventory and maintain gift shop and make gift shop sales
  • Answer phones and represent the site in a cheerful, positive way
  • Maintain cleanliness of buildings and work areas
  • Setup, staff and clean up all special events (12+ annually)
  • Supervise facility rentals
  • Light manual labor
  • Assist with summer camps (4+ weeks per summer)

Must be 18 years of age or older. Requires a fair amount of walking on uneven ground, exposure to outdoor temperatures, and the ability to be own manager. The ideal candidate will be responsible, reliable, and hardworking, show initiative, and possess excellent communication skills. Should have experience dealing with the public, all ages and backgrounds, an interest in history and/or community relations, able to work independently and as a team player, and available to work weekends with flexibility to work weekday mornings. Applicants without weekday availability need not apply.

Hours: Thursdays- Saturdays, with flexibility to work some Sundays and weekdays as needed. Nights required occasionally.
